As citizens of any country, it is important to know what your civil rights are, and how those rights apply when it comes to criminal mug shots online, or any other aspect of police law. When it comes to police law, both police and the individual civilians within the country should understand what their civil rights are, as sometimes those rights are violated. Police training as well as criminal law education involves the study of civil rights and civil liberties, so that police and other law enforcement agencies have a thorough knowledge and understanding of both police law and civil rights.

Online publication of criminal mug shots online is currently controversial.  This is first of all because it is believed that the information may be exploited for entertainment or voyeuristic purposes rather than for legitimate public concern.  The second reason that publication of criminal mug shots online is currently controversial has to do with the legality of posting people who have been arrested yet not convicted for the crimes with which they are charged.  It is often argued that television and other media often publish reports and pictures of those arrested prior to trial in the same manner, so if it is illegal then they must be held accountable too.

For those who are interested in the field of law enforcement and want to become a policeman, understanding and learning police law as well as civil rights and civil liberties as they apply to things like criminal mug shots online can be an important aspect of training. Citizens of a country have a personal duty to fully understand what their civil rights and civil liberties are, whether police or civilian. Citizens themselves should never expect that the police or other police law enforcement agencies will be solely required to explain to them what their personal civil rights or civil liberties are, that is the responsibility of the individual citizen to learn that themselves. When citizens understand what their civil rights and civil liberties are, they can better respect police law and be responsible, educated and productive citizens within the country.
